History:
The Catedral Metropolitana (Buenos Aires) is located in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is the seat of the Archdiocese of Buenos Aires, housing the seat of the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, Cardinal Mario Aurelio Poli. The cathedral has a long and varied history that goes back to 1580, when the first church was built on the site where the Catedral Metropolitana now stands. At this time, the area that would become Buenos Aires was still a small city and the need for a permanent, larger church was seen and an expedition was sent to Europe in 1591, with the request to obtain the materials to build the new church. The first stone of this new church was laid in 1594 by Cardinal Pedro López de Sotocavallos, though the construction faced many delays, mainly due to the scarcity of funds. Construction proceeded slowly but steadily, and in 1620 the church was dedicated to the “Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary”. However, progress was slow and for much of the 17th and 18th centuries the church was in deteriorating condition, made worse by an earthquake in 1748. In 1776, the church was designated as the metropolitan church of the Diocese of Buenos Aires, and in 1847 it was made a cathedral church. The beginning of the 19th century saw the church begin to receive much needed repairs, with work beginning in 1822 and taking over 20 years to complete. The current facade of the cathedral was added during this period and the interior was decorated with paintings, tapestries, and sculptures. The front of the building was also redone in a more classical style. Today, the church is considered one of the most important religious sites in Argentina, and it continues to play an important role in the Latin-American Catholic Church. The Catedral Metropolitana is an important architectural monument to the history of Buenos Aires, as well as a symbol of faith and commitment for the faithful of the Catholic Church.
