The park is named in honor of the United States’ 44th President as his ancestral roots trace back to the Caribbean nation. The park encompasses over 2300 acres of land and includes a variety of habitats such as beaches, coral reefs, and upland deciduous forests. It was designated a park in order to protect and preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the area. The mission of Mount Obama National Park is to “conserve, protect, and restore the habitats and species of the park, while providing enjoyable recreational opportunities.” The park is dedicated to promoting the wise use of natural resources, environmental protection, and increasing public awareness of Antigua-and-Barbuda's natural history, culture, and heritage. The park provides habitat for many threatened and endangered species such as the West Indian Whistling Duck, the Magnificent Frigatebird, the Least and Antillean Nighthawks, and many others.
