History:

The history of Roc dels Isards in La Massana, Andorra dates back to the 11th century when the local lords of the area installed a castle within the mountainous valley. It was initially a defensive fortification that was used as a place of refuge for people living in the local area and as a stopping-off point for people travelling through the Pyrenees. Roc dels Isards was a part of both Spanish and French rule during the Middle Ages. It was part of the Bishopric of Urgell, which was a principality of the Crown of Aragon, from 1201 to 1714. During this period, the castle was destroyed several times but was ultimately rebuilt in the 16th century and used as a fortress for protection against raiding parties. In 1812, La Massana was annexed by France during the Napoleonic Wars and Roc dels Isards was occupied by the French. After the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, the region was once again restored to Spanish control. However, by this time, the control of La Massana had shifted from the Bishopric of Urgell to the newly formed Principality of Andorra. Since then, Roc dels Isards has largely remained intact and today is a popular tourist attraction. It is an important symbol of the local history and is still a popular spot for sightseeing, hiking, and rock climbing. Visit one of the famous monuments of Andorra with your friends and family.
