History:
Església de Sant Miquel de la Mosquera, located in Encamp, Andorra, is a small church dedicated to Saint Michael and constructed in the 12th century. It is one of the oldest churches in Andorra and, though it is in ruins, still stands to this day. The precise date of construction is unknown, as much of its history has been lost over time. It appears that it was built by the counts of Urgell, Lords of Andorra and Ensaundis, as a part of their feudal holdings in the area. It is a Romanesque building of Unknown origin, possibly dating to the 11th century. Its walls are composed of both sandstone and granite and feature a unique semi-round apse in the rear of the building. The church was also used as a fortress during the Middle Ages, and there are records of it being used as a defense against invasions. Some of its original defensive features still remain, including two small towers near the entrance and battlements above the church. The church did not remain a fortress for long, as it was converted into a chapel in the 15th century. Its interior features a single nave design, and it is decorated with a variety of frescoes. Some have suggested that the frescoes might have been commissioned by the counts of Urgell, Lord Aguiló or General Father Inocente de Merida. Today, Església de Sant Miquel de la Mosquera is a popular tourist attraction. Though it is in ruins, and there is not much to see in terms of its historical features, it is still worth a visit for its unique architecture and the atmosphere it provides. It is also believed to be the location of a shrine to Saint Michael, which is now a popular pilgrimage destination. Visit one of the famous monuments of Andorra with your friends and family.
