History:

La Coma Ridge is a mountain ridge located in the Principality of Andorra, located in the Middle Pyrenees between France and Spain. It lies in La Massana parish, which is the largest parish of the principality. The ridge has been inhabited since pre-Roman times and is part of an important UNESCO World Heritage site, the Madriu-Perafita-Claror Valley. The first recorded reference to the area of La Massana dates from 707 AD, when Charlemagne granted these valleys, alongside the Estavar Valley, to the abbot of San Andres de la Barca. During the twelfth century, the Valleys of Coma and Estavar were granted to the knight Ermengol de Sanclimens, who later repopulated La Massana. Most of the houses of La Massana are dating from the 18th century, when Andorra started a process of modernization. The village was affected by a major fire in 1855 that destroyed many buildings in the area. From then onwards, much of the buildings in the village were replaced or reconstructed, although there are still some ancient buildings that survived the fire, such as the Romanesque church of San Miguel de Massana and the "Casa Vieja" from the 16th century. In later years, the economy of La Massana was heavily dependent on agricultural activity, although in the 20th century, the village developed into a modern ski resort. In 2003, it was granted the prize of best ski resort in the Pyrenees. Today, La Massana is a popular destination for its natural beauty, world-class skiing, and unique culture. It is one of the most visited spots in the country and a place where history and nature combine to create a special atmosphere.
