History:

The history of Andorra la Vella, the capital of the Principality of Andorra, dates back many centuries. It is believed that the first settlement in the area dates to the 8th century when Charlemagne established the village of Coll Jovell, and it is likely that the Romans also had a presence in the area. In 1278, the Lords of Foix-Bearn, the Count of Urgell-Barcelona and the Bishop of Urgell made the Peace of Coll Jovell, in which they agreed on the framework under which Andorra would remain a de facto independent state until the present day. Since then, Andorra la Vella has been the home to the executive and legislature branches of the government of Andorra and the main population centre of the small principality. The city hosts the largest population of any in Andorra and is the main cultural and business hub of the country.
