History:

The Funicamp Cable Car in Encamp, Andorra, has been running since 1967 and links the parish of Encamp with the ski resort of El Pas de la Casa. The car was built with the intention of providing skiers with the best possible access to the slopes, and today is considered a fundamental part of the Andorran skiing experience. The idea behind the Funicamp Cable Car was initiated in 1962 by the ski instructor and hotelier Emili Juncosa. After an unsuccessful attempt to implement the plan in Arties, a ski resort in the Spanish province of Girona, Andorra was chosen as the ideal location for the project. Work began during the summer of 1965, and a year and a half later the Funicamp Cable Car was officially opened. The first ski lift cost around 300,000 pesetas, and could transport up to eight passengers in the cabins at a time, up to the summit of the mountain at 2,100 m above sea level. Initially the Funicamp Cable Car operated with two cabins but this number was quickly increased to four cabins in 1971, when the final section of the car was installed. Over the years, the Funicamp Cable Car has undergone several renovations and upgrades, most recently in 2020 when a new 8-seater cabin and control system were installed. This upgrade has improved the customer experience and reduced the travel time from 10 minutes to 8 minutes. This cable car is now the highest in Europe, reaching heights of up to 2,656 metres above sea level. Offering stunning views of the Granvalira ski station and the surrounding countryside, the Funicamp Cable Car is one of Andorra's most beloved attractions. Visitors flock to the slopes each winter to take advantage of the spectacular vistas, while locals cherish the cable car as a symbol of their country's commitment to providing top-quality skiing facilities.
