Worship Method:
The Sangameswara Temple follows the traditional methods of worship found in Hindu temples throughout India. The temple is open at 5.30 a.m. every day and the first puja is performed at 6 a.m. This puja involves lighting an oil lamp in front of the deity and chanting mantras associated with Lord Siva. At 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., there are large one-hour aaratis performed, where priests chant various mantras and ring bells in a specific order, and devotees circumambulate the deity. These aaratis involve lighting of a lamp, ringing the bell, offering incense and flowers, chanting of mantras, and waving a camphor and sandalwood fire in front of the deity. On special festival days and during the ‘Navaratri’ celebrations, the poojas become even more elaborate and there are special offerings and pujas that are conducted. On these days, great revellers and a large crowd from the surrounding areas flock to the temple to witness and participate in the religious celebrations.
