History:
is an ancient temple located in the Srisailam of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. It is one of the twelve famed Jyotirlinga Shrines in India and one of its most popular pilgrimage centers for Shaivites. The temple is dedicated to Mallikarjuna or Lord Shiva. The temple has two main shrines inside it – one is dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other one is dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The temple dates back to the 7th and 8th centuries and is built around the holy cave of Bhramaragiri. According to the legends, the temple was visited by Adi Shankara and he also wrote a hymn in praise of Lord Shiva. The temple complex also houses a four-foot Shiva Lingam, a meditation hall and other small shrines. The Lingam inside the cave is believed to be very powerful and it is said that those who worship it with devotion can obtain inner peace and strength. Srisailam Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple follows Smartha Agamic rituals and traditions. Worshippers offer their prayers by lighting lamps, performing special poojas, carrying traditional designs crafted in flowers' and offering sweets to the deity. Offerings made to the Lord include abhishekams such as the punyahavachanam, maha pooja, thirumanjanam, purnahuti, and homam. Devotees also chant mantras and hymns such as trisati, saptasati, kanakadurga, jaya durga, koushambhavati, and paalikaaalu. Special rituals such as the kalasa pooja, ekadasa Rudra parayanam, Sri Chalisa, sahasranamaarchana, Samputarchana, Garuda seva, and Rathotsava are also practiced regularly here.
