History:
The town of Taghit is located in the Béchar province of the Algerian Sahara. It is an oasis located in a flat area a few kilometres south of the Mîn kâti Wâdî, the last left arm of the Oued Saoura, which brings it water. The first records of Taghit date back to the 10th century AD, when it was part of the realm of the Sanhajah, and was called Ghardaïah, a Berber town of the Djilfa. Following the breakup of the Sanhajah in the 11th century, Taghit became part of the Sultanate of Tlemcen. During the French colonial period, Taghit was part of the deparment of Ghardaïah in the Algerian Sahara. In the years following Algerian independence in 1962, the town began to prosper due to its strategic position and the growing presence of oil exploration and prospecting activities in the region. Today, Taghit is a small town that is home to a few thousand people. It has a market every Wednesday, as well as a few small shops and restaurants. The town also has a health centre and primary school. Despite its remote location, the town is well connected to other towns in the region, thanks to regular bus routes and links to Algeria's main cities.
