Brief History:
Mansourah Mosque, also known as the Grand Mosque of Tlemcen, dates back to the 13th century during the Almohad dynasty. It was built by the Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf and is regarded as the largest mosque in Tlemcen, Algeria. This mosque was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in on 11 July 2019. The mosque hosts many archaeological images from the Islamic expressionism and different elements that could be linked to the Almohads. The mosque still holds fort today and has been well maintained. It features elaborate designs of carvings, cedar wood arches, and courtyards, as well as minarets and two golden domes. It is one of the most famous mosque in Algeria which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Mansourah Mosque of Tlemcen is an important example of Almohade architecture in the region. The mosque was built between 1136 and 1146 AD by the reigning ruler of the city: Yaghmoracen Abu Yacoub Yusuf. The mosque is divided into three separate parts: a large rectangular courtyard, an iwan hall, and a central prayer hall. The outer facade of the mosque is composed of alternating arched and rectangular walls, with twin minarets flanking the entrance. The courtyard is lined with triple arcades on the east and west sides, while the north and south walls have double arcades with a single central door. The prayer hall consists of eight pointed arches that support a wooden framework and roof, which are divided into three sections. In the centre of the prayer hall is an octagonal open space, while the other section houses the altar and the ablutions fountain. The iwan hall or prayer niche is constructed of marble columns and is illuminated by four smaller stained glass windows. Traditional Islamic calligraphy adorns the walls and interior of the mosque. The mosque is a significant part of Tlemcen’s rich architectural heritage and is an important example of Almohade design in Algeria. This architecture influenced later North African and Andalusian monuments, making it a unique example of this style of architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
Mansourah Mosque is open to the public from 9 am-11:30 am and from 4 pm-7 pm. Sunday is closed for prayer but visitors are still welcome. best mosque in the world.
