Makam Echahid (“Martyr’s Memorial” in English) is a memorial in the form of a towering monument in the El Mouradia section of Algiers, Algeria. The monument is a symbol of the Algerian struggle for independence from French colonial rule. It was built to commemorate the memories of the Algerians who fought and died in that fight, and can be seen as a symbol of the Algerian people's continued bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. Makam Echahid was commissioned in 1963 and was designed by the architect Mohamed Bouvier. It is comprised of three majestic stands of white and green marble columns that stand 21 meters high, each representing a fighter (an Algerian volunteer), a martyr and a mujahideen (an Algerian rebel). At the top of the column is a six-pointed star, which signifies freedom. The columns are set in a square that features a reflecting pool as well as a flame of memory that burns night and day. To the southwest of the memorial is an area of gardens known as the Martyr's Garden. This area was designed by Jean-François Zevaco and contains 44 engraved marble tablets inscribed with the names of thousands of Algerian people who died for the cause of freedom and revolt against colonial rule.
