It was built by the Umayyad rulers and is considered one of the masterpieces of Islamic architecture in the Maghreb region. The mosque was dedicated to the patron saints of the town and was used as a meeting place for its inhabitants. The mosque complex includes a central courtyard and a prayer hall that is flanked by two colonnades. The mosque features a unique staircase entrance leading to its minaret, which is decorated with stucco carvings. Numerous other buildings and features are included in the complex, such as a mausoleum, a gate arch, and other decorative structures. The Djemila Mosque in Algeria is a significant example of the Middle Eastern Islamic architecture found throughout the Maghreb region. It was built in the 9th century CE, during the reign of the Aghlabid sultan Ziyadat Allah II. It comprises three structures: a mosque, minaret, and mausoleum. The mosque consists of a large courtyard with five aisles that are divided by five closed arcades, each with four entrances. The mosque also boasts three large domes at its east end, indicating it is a Friday mosque. The minaret, located in the middle of the courtyard, is a cylindrical structure with a narrow staircase leading up to a small balcony. The mausoleum has two facades with two pavilions at the north and south ends, as well as five smaller domes. The mausoleum features decorative details such as Kufic inscriptions and muqarnas.
