Brief History:
: The Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaa el Djazair) is a large mosque and one of the oldest buildings in Algiers, located in the Casbah of Algiers. The construction of the mosque was begun in 1097 and finished in 1101. It offers a unique view on traditional Islamic architecture and it has numerous small rooms, minarets and towers. The mosque is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered to be a masterpiece of Algerian architecture and an important cultural and historical landmark. It is one of the most famous mosque in Algeria which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Djamaa el Djazair, or Great Mosque of Algiers, is a vast and impressive mosque complex located in Algiers, Algeria. Completed in 1660, the mosque was constructed in the Ottoman Baroque style, and covers an area of 5420 square meters. It contains two minarets that are each 42 meters in height, and it is surrounded by a wall with three gates. Inside the complex there is a vast courtyard, surrounded by arched colonnades and porticoes. This design is based on the courtyard of the Mosque of the Sharifian Caliphate of Tunis. There is a large fountain at the center of the courtyard, as well as an ablutions fountain and several tombs along the outer walls. The entrance to the prayer hall is through a lavish set of decorated double doors, which feature calligraphic inscriptions that reference God and the Prophet Muhammad. Inside the prayer hall, the architecture takes on a classical Ottoman style, with marble columns and a central dome. There are seven naves and twenty nine bays, all encircled by semi-domes. The mihrab, or prayer niche, is made of intricately carved marble, and stands in the center of the northern wall. The interior also features exquisite Iznik tiles, and multiple inscriptions, including a long inscription at the back of the prayer hall which is attributed to the Moroccan scholar Ahmad al-Tifashi. Additionally, the complex also features a library, a mausoleum, and various other courtyards. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.

The Great Mosque of Algiers (Djamaa el Djazair) is open to the public each day from 8am to 4pm. It is closed on Fridays. best mosque in the world.
