As of 1998, its population was estimated to be 46,000. It is a suburb of Algiers, and is known for its long beaches, fishing harbors, and seaside restaurants. History:

Bordj el Kiffan (or Bordj El Kiffane in French) is a commune located in the coastal area of Algiers Province, Algeria. It lies alongside the Mediterranean Sea and is approximately 16 miles east of the capital Algiers. The area was first inhabited long ago by the indigenous Berbers. Over time many different empires and cultures have ruled this area, such as the Roman and Ottoman empires from Europe, and the Carthaginian, Numidian, and Vandal empires from North Africa. In the 12th century, the area was conquered by the Almohad Dynasty and renamed "Bordj el Kiffane", meaning "Fort of the Pirates". The area was named after a group of pirates that the Almohads expelled. In the 19th century, the commune was occupied by the French and was known as Bordj-Kiffan-Marseille. During this period, the population of the area increased as French and Algerian settlers moved in. After independence in 1962, Bordj el Kiffan became an independent commune. It is now known for its sandy beaches, museums, sports venues, and development projects. The area has grown significantly in population since its inclusion in Greater Algiers, and is a popular tourist destination.
