History:

The Theth National Park is a protected natural area located in Northern Albania. Established in 1996, the park covers an area of 23,250 hectares and comprises a unique mountainous landscape of the Theth region. The Theth region has a long history, first mentioned during the fifteenth century, where the area was inhabited by locals that lived among isolated communities. Under Ottoman rule, the region was part of a mountainous feudal system of government and lasted until 1912. In 1912, Theth National Park was established and was initially known as the Park of High Alps. This park was one of the largest alpine parks in Europe, much of its current status is a result of the efforts bylocal inhabitants to preserve and protect the environment of Theth. Unfortunitaly, during the communist era, much of the parks development was put on hold and even saw periods of destruction as a consequence of being used for military training. After the fall of communism, the Park was reclaimed and became protected by the national government in 1996. The Park was later recognized by UNESCO in 2002 as part of the European World Heritage as "Thethi National Park-A Living cultural landscape". Today, the park is celebrated by tourists and locals alike, and continues to be a subject of important development efforts for the preservation and protection of Thethi's natural and cultural heritage. Today, visitors can enjoy numerous activities such as hiking, rafting, climbing, and horseback riding. Moreover, the Park also offers spectacular scenery of the surrounding landscapes, including traditional villages, mountains, valleys, rivers, rock formations, forests, and meadows. The Theth National Park is an essential part of Albanian culture and heritage, and it continues to be a prime tourist destination.
