History:

St. Mary's Monastery was founded by Archimandrite Platon (now St. Platon of Moscow), who was chosen by the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church to be the first Abbot of St. Mary's in 1895. He was also assisted by Hieromonk Ioann (later St. Ioann of St. Petersburg and Ladoga). St. Platon served as the Abbot of St. Mary's for the first five years, and was succeeded by St. Ioann in the year 1900. Since then, the monastery has grown and developed in response to the needs of the people living in the area, as well as to grow in size and serve its primary purpose of providing a home for those seeking refuge in the name of the Virgin Mary and of the Orthodox Church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Albania.
