History:

Saint Peter and Paul Church (also known as St. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church) is a Serbian Orthodox church in the city of Përmet in Gjirokastër County, Albania. It was built in 1795 and serves as the main Serbian Orthodox Church in the city. The church is dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, and is part of the Eparchy of Gjirokastër. It has a mixture of elements from both the Byzantine and Albanian architectural styles. The Serbian Orthodox Church played a significant role in the long-standing presence of Serbian population in Përmet. It is believed that a Serbian population had inhabited the area since the 16th century, mainly as part of the local Serbian migration from the neighboring Serbia and Montenegro. The church has been damaged several times throughout history, most notably during World War II. After the war, it was extensively renovated and restored. Today, it serves as a symbol of Serbia's religious and cultural heritage in the city of Përmet. The church also served as a safe house during the Kosovo War of 1998–1999, when it was used as a refuge for Serbians and Roma families who had fled from the conflict in Kosovo. It is presently a major tourist destination in Përmet, attracting visitors from all around Albania and Serbia.
