History:

The Saint Nicholas Church (Albanian: Kisha Shen Kolli or Kisha e Shën Kollit) is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of Tirana, Albania. It is believed to have been established in the early 15th century, at the same time as the establishment of the city. It has since been rebuilt and renovated several times. The first recorded mention of the church comes from 1512, when Alvise Loredano, a Venetian traveller who visited Tirana, wrote that the city had two churches. One of them was Saint Nicholas. In 1614, the church was renovated and enlarged. In 1622, an additional floor was added to the building. In 1625, a bell tower was added. In 1708, the church underwent further renovations. This included building a portico and adding a cupola on top of the building. In the 18th century, the church was part of a Franciscan Monastery, and was used as a place for religious services and prayer. In 1813, the church was badly damaged by fire and was later restored. In 1925, the church underwent another renovation, with the support of the Catholic Monarchs. Around this time, the church was also damaged by an earthquake. After World War II, the church was used mainly for cultural events and meetings. In 1982, the church was declared a national monument by the Albanian state. Today, Saint Nicholas Church serves as a place of worship, cultural heritage site and a tourist attraction. In recent years, the church has undergone renovations in order to preserve its original beauty and to ensure that it can continue to be used for religious and cultural events. The church is part of the Catholic Diocese of Tirana-Durrës and is a member of the Albanian Conference of Catholic Bishops (ACCB).
