The Church traces its roots back to the time of St. Paul's missionary work in the area, and it has been present in Albania for the past 1,700 years. History:

The Church was first established in the third century C.E. by St. Paul's missionary work. During the Middle Ages, it continued to be the dominant faith in the region, and in the fourteenth century, it was recognized by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople as an autonomous church within the Eastern Orthodox communion. In 1922, after Albania gained independence from the Ottoman Empire, the Church was declared autocephalous. This meant that it was allowed to govern itself and was no longer subject to the patriarch in Constantinople. In the twentieth century, the Church suffered under the rule of the totalitarian regime of Enver Hoxha. The Church was persecuted and driven underground during this time. After the fall of the regime in 1991, the Church emerged once more to its current state. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Albania.
