History:

Saint Peter and Paul Church is a historic church located in Shkodër, Albania. It is the only Catholic Church in the country that is still active. The church was built in 1579 as part of the impact of the Counter-Reformation movement which was initiated by Pope Pius V. The original building was constructed by Friar Michele de Como, an Italian with Franciscan training. During the 17th century, several renovations were made, including a bell tower with four bells. After its 17th-century renovations, the church was re-consecrated in 1729 and dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul, and its current name was adopted. In 1840, a series of changes and enhancements were made to the church, which was renovated once again in 1864 by Italian painter Giuseppe Zandonatti. Other renovations and modifications made to the church over the years included the addition of a crypt in 1893. The church suffered major damage during World War II and was partially destroyed. It was restored again in the 1990s and is now a popular tourist destination in Shkodër. Today, Saint Peter and Paul Church is an important place of Catholic worship in Albania.
