History:
The Ali Pasha Castle is a majestic fortification located on a peninsula in Porto Palermo Bay, in Vlore-Vlora, Albania. The castle was named after Ali Pasha of Tepelenë, the ruler of the area from 1788 to 1822. The castle was built in 1813 by Ali Pasha to serve as a coastal defense against foreign invaders. The castle consists of a large keep surrounded by thick walls, with watchtowers and gun portals built to guard the fortress. At one time, the castle may have contained a library, palace, and royal chambers. The keep contained cannons and mortars, as well as barracks for more than four hundred soldiers. The castle became a point of contention between Ali Pasha and the Ottoman Empire when he declared himself independent in 1821. Ottoman forces besieged the castle in April of 1822 and Ali Pasha was captured and later executed. After the death of Ali Pasha, the castle was occupied by the Ottomans until they withdrew in 1938. The castle was then used by the Italian military during World War II. After the war, it was used as a prison. Today, the Ali Pasha Castle is a popular tourist attraction. It has been carefully restored, and visitors can enjoy the spectacular views of the bay from its towers. There is a museum inside the castle, as well as a nearby beach.
