The mausoleum is known for its unique architectural features and is considered to be one of the most iconic monuments of Kabul City. It is also listed as a National Monument of Afghanistan. The mausoleum includes a large marble-covered dome beneath which lies the tomb chamber. The exterior walls are decorated with several calligraphic panels containing passages from the Quran. History:

Ghazi Amanullah Khan was the first king of Afghanistan from 1919 to 1929. He was an influential leader of the country and was responsible for the reform and modernization of Afghanistan during his reign. In 2014, he was posthumously given the title "Father of Afghanistan" by President Hamid Karzai. The mausoleum of Ghazi Amanullah Khan was built in Kabul in the late 1940s to commemorate the king's legacy and to honor his memory. The mausoleum was designed by Gabriele Kienerkofen and the construction was overseen by the Italian architect Giuseppe Manfredi. The mausoleum is located in the city center of Kabul and consists of a main square, a circular colonnaded hall, a pool, and two minarets that stand tall in the center of the square. The mausoleum is an important landmark in Kabul and is highly visited by visitors who want to pay homage to the former king and also to learn more about Afghanistan’s past. The mausoleum is also used as a venue for official ceremonies and events. In 2006, the mausoleum underwent extensive renovations and repairs by a team of Afghan and Italian restorers and engineers.The renovations included “consolidation of the vaults, cleaning, and replacement of damaged elements” and the installation of “lighting and sound systems in the hall”. The exterior of the mausoleum was also restored to match its original appearance. After the fall of the Taliban regime in 2001, the mausoleum was opened to the public and since then it opens regularly for visits from the public on Thursdays and Fridays between 4pm and 8pm.
