Johann Rudolf enlarged and embellished the castle, adding the north and south wings, the courtyard with its four arcades, a gate and a staircase. The main building was probably built in the Renaissance style, but later remodelled in the Baroque style.
The castle remained in the Erlach family until 1945, when it was sold to the canton of Fribourg. The canton restored the castle and opened it to the public in 1972, maintaining it as a museum.
