Unakoti which is famously called the Angkor Wat of the Northeast is competing for the UNESCO World Heritage tag and both ASI and the government trying hard to preserve thousands of Shaivite rock figures, images of gods and goddesses, and carvings. Unakoti is located in Tripura which is one of the best places to visit in the Northeast.  




Why it is known as Angkor Wat in the Northeast? It is known as Angkor Wat because of the gigantic rock-cut sculptures and contains rare mongoloid features which are displayed in the same way as the spellbinding figures in the Angkor Wat temple. 

According to a recent report, the Government of India has requested UNESCO to declare Unakoti as a World Heritage Site to attract tourists from all over the world to India. Plus, it has also granted around 1.4 million to develop the area as a major tourist attraction. The state government is also putting a lot of effort to develop various areas near the site and build an epic center of tourism in the Northeast region. 

If we believe reports, this mysterious site has a lineage heritage of the 7th-9th centuries. The big rock sculpture carvings, beautiful waterfall, and murals are denoted as Shaiba (Saivite) pilgrimage. The meaning of Unakoti is ‘one less to one crore’ and it is named because almost 99,999,99 structures are present in Unakoti. 




Tripura is famous for its landscapes, beautiful hills, waterfall, and lakes. The culture and tradition reflect the Northeast’s divine heritage. This pilgrimage is famous and people who visit the Northeast region definitely visit Unakoti. It is one of the best hill stations in India to visit.
