For thirteen nights at Sydney Solstice, the monumental steps of the Opera House will be transformed by live music, conversations, and poetry readings. Every night at sunset, you can also see this year’s Badu Gili – a six-minute screening of the Opera House’s East Bennelong sails. Badu Gili means “water light” in Gadigal’s language and shares the ancient stories and rich contemporary culture of Australia’s first nations. This year’s Badu Gili: Wonder Woman screening marks the third chapter in lighting the sails and brings to life a history of shared histories – from Eureka Stockade and Mission Days to the devastating bushfires of 2019-20. It introduces intimate family encounters and the everyday life of the First Nations community, as well as the world of imaginary superheroes. Works of art previously presented in 2017 and 2018 will also be on display. The top major event in June will also feature a pop-up bar offering drinks and snacks, inspired by native ingredients and cared for by the leader of the first nations.
