The very first underwater train is soon going to operate in Kolkata, West Bengal. According to the reports, Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation has expanded its Kolkata Metro Rail Corridor which has twin tunnels under the Hooghly River for 500 m. This metro train will be one-of-its-kind because of its depth and beauty. It is compared to the rail Eurostar, which connects Paris and London.Â
If we go by the reports, the depth of the Kolkata Metro Train is equivalent to a 9 to 10-storey structure. Currently, Hauz Khas, Delhi has the deepest metro station in India with a depth of 29 m. However, after Kolkata Metro Train will be in operation, it will hold the title of the deepest metro line in India. Â
The twin tunnel is around 1.4 meters wide and built with concrete rings which will help in building an underwater metro rail. Plus, the rail is equipped with a Hydrophilic gasket which will prevent water from entering the tunnel. Â
According to the data, the whole project is complete in approximately INR 8600 crore and will operational from March 2023. Howrah Metro Tunnel will be 33m deep and will become the deepest metro tunnel in India. Furthermore, the tunnel also has the emergency exits like earthquakes.Â
A new metro corridor which is the East-West corridor has been opened and was inaugurated by Union Minister Smriti Irani. In 2023, four additional metro stations Esplanade, Mahakaran, Howrah, and Howrah Maidan will be added. The Hooghly River twin tunnel will connect Howrah and Howrah Maidan in a span of a minute.  Â
