Lake Como is the most famous lake in Italy and the most popular romantic destination. In fairly moderate weather, Lake Como can be visited at any time of the year. The lake is surrounded by beautiful villas and holiday villages, as well as hiking trails, and is popular for boat trips, water activities, and photography. The Lake Garda region is one of the best lakes in Italy, but in the summer it can be unbearable – half of Europe goes there on holiday and it can be very hot and humid. One of my favorite things to do is a short hike to Lake Ledro, a smaller but no less beautiful lake located in the valley of the same name, about a half-hour drive from Riva. Lake Ledro is 650 meters above sea level, so it is usually much cooler than down in the valley. You can go for a walk around the lake, go fishing, rent a pedal or swim in the cool emerald waters of the lake.

9. Lake Maggiore
