The traditional worship method of Zhanshan temple is called “Tianxu”, which stands for “burning incense”. This is an ancient practice used to pay homage and express reverence to the temple’s deity, Lord Li Shizhen, who is an incarnation of Laozi and the supreme ruler of the universe. During a visit to the temple, visitors kneel down in front of the main altar and present incense wood,sandalwood, and joss paper as offerings to the deity. They burn the incense wood and sandalwood to create smoke which is believed to carry their wishes and prayers to the gods. The joss paper is then burned to represent the offering of paper money to the gods. After praying, visitors may choose to make small donations in the box near the altar.
