Yu Garden is a Chinese classical garden located in the northeast of the Old City of Shanghai. The Yu Garden, also known as the Yuyuan Garden, was originally built between 1559 and 1577 during the Ming Dynasty by Pan Yunduan. Yunduan was commissioned to restore the garden by his father, the Governor of Sichuan, as a gift to his mother. The entire project took 19 years to complete. The garden contains pavilions, halls, rockeries, ponds, and bridges, as well as elaborate carvings. It also has numerous rockeries, which are believed to be inspired by natural terrain. In total, it covers an area of 2 hectares.
