United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN) In Nigeria: History,Facts, & Services
The United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN) is the largest indigenous Protestant church in Nigeria. It is part of the global Methodist denomination whose roots can be traced back to the teachings of John and Charles Wesley. The UMCN was established in 1854 when a mission was formed through the efforts of three Wesleyans who were commissioned by the Church Missionary Society. Since that time, the UMCN has grown and spread throughout the country, with over 11 million Nigerians identifying as United Methodists.
The UMCN's mission is to promote the spiritual, social, and economic transformation of Nigerian people by showing God's love, as stated in its 2014 to 2018 mission statement: "The Mission of the United Methodist Church of Nigeria is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of Nigeria and the World." Its core beliefs and values board on Wesley's teachings and traditional Anglican doctrine.
The UMCN provides many services for its congregants, such as health clinics, education opportunities, leadership development, and community outreach, among other activities. The church has also invested financially in seminaries, universities, hospitals, and other infrastructures. It has organized multiple evangelism and missionary tours, as well as broadcasting and telecommunications projects. Currently, the UMCN is celebrating its centenary year, having just reached its 100th anniversary in 2018.
