The origins of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican communion lie in the arrival of the first Anglican missionaries in Nigeria in 1842. These missionaries were sent out by the Church Missionary Society, an arm of the Church of England. Over the following decades, the Anglican mission spread throughout the country and eventually formed an independent diocese in 1864 with Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther as the first bishop. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Nigeria.
