Shuanglin Temple (Shuanglin Si), located in Pingyao, Shanxi province, is one of the most famous temple complexes in China. The temple is renowned for its outstanding and unique collection of over 500 sculptures depicting various Buddhist figures, each with its own unique characteristics. The temple’s elaborately decorated architecture has been in existence since the Song Dynasty, making it one of the oldest and most unique temples in the world. Shuanglin Temple follows a Chinese-style Buddhist worship ritual. Each day, the monks and nuns gather in the meditation hall and chant in unison. This is followed by rituals of incense burning, sutra-reading, and bowing. In the innermost sanctum of the temple, the monks and nuns perform prayers and ceremonies for the dead. The praying ritual includes the offering of prayers for the souls of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Arhats, and other deities as well as for the welfare of living beings. As worshippers make their way around the temple, they can witness the offering of flowers and other objects to the various statues. Shuanglin Temple is located in Shuanglin Town, near the city of Yingxian, in the Shanxi Province of China. The nearest major international airport to Shuanglin Temple is the Beijing Capital International Airport. From here, you can take a direct train to the Yingxian Railway Station located 3 km (1.8 miles) from the temple. If you’re traveling by train from Beijing, you can take an overnight train from Beijing South Railway Station to Taiyuan Railway Station. From here, you will need to take a bus to Yingxian and then transfer to a local bus to Shuanglin Town. The nearest high speed railway station to Shuanglin Temple is the Yingxian North Railway Station located 16 km (9.9 miles) away. If you’re traveling by car, there are three routes you can take: the G18 Expressway, the G45 Expressway, and the G15 Expressway. The fastest route from Beijing is by G18 Expressway and then G15 Expressway which will take around 5-6 hours.
