Nigerian Evangelical Mission Association In Nigeria: History,Facts, & Services
The Nigerian Evangelical Mission Association (NEMA) is a non-denominational Christian organization that was formed in 1952 to help coordinate the efforts of evangelical missions in Nigeria. The organization is currently comprised of hundreds of churches and mission agencies that work together to provide spiritual, social, and medical assistance to isolated communities across Nigeria.
History
NEMA traces its roots back to a meeting of missionary leaders held at the Yaba Christian Center in Lagos on October 7, 1952. In attendance were representatives from the Assemblies of God, Catholic Charismatic Renewal, Christian Reformed Church, Church of God Mission, Church of Nigeria, Methodist Church Nigeria, and other denominations. The purpose of this gathering was to discuss the need for a unified mission effort to serve the spiritual, social, and medical needs of the people in Nigeria. The following day, the group formed the Nigerian Evangelical Association, which was renamed the Nigerian Evangelical Mission Association (NEMA) soon afterward.
NEMA has since grown to include over 100 churches, mission organizations, and related institutions. These organizations have come together to bring assistance to some of the poorest, most isolated communities in Nigeria. The organization has focused on training local leaders and providing funds to construct housing and churches in remote or rural areas.
