The Museum of Pre-Columbian Art or Museo de Arte Precolombino (MAP) is a museum located in the historical downtown district of Lima, Peru. The collection was founded by the connoisseur of Pre-Columbian art, Alfredo Huanacuni Makai, and is dedicated to the study, promotion, and preservation of the artistic expressions of the Amerindian ancient cultures of Peru. The museum houses an outstanding collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts, from all regions of Peru, from early cultures such as Kotosh, Huari, Chavín, Nasca, Moche, Chachapoyas, and others, up to the Inca Empire. MAP showcases ceremonial and cultural objects from more than 2000 years of pre-Hispanic life. The Museum of Pre-Columbian Art (MAP) in Lima was founded in 1954. The origin of the museum and its current collection dates back to 1928 when businessman Milo Levinson purchased artifacts and began displaying them in his home in Lima. As the collection grew, so did public interest and in 1954 Levinson and several Peruvian archaeologists decided to found the Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. The museum was officially opened in 1965 and housed in a colonial-style building in the heart of Lima. In the early years, the museum’s collection focused primarily on pre-Columbian artifacts from Peru; however, over the years, it has expanded to include an impressive variety of ancient and contemporary artifacts from all over South America. Today, the museum’s collection includes more than 6,000 artifacts from a vast range of Pre-Columbian cultures, including the Inca, Moche, Chavin, Wari and other ancient peoples of Peru.
