, the Museo Nacional de Arqueología, Antropología e Historia del Perú (National Museum of Archaeology, Anthropology and History of Peru) was founded on April 13, 1822, in the San Jerónimo Monastery in Lima. The museum was the first modern institution dedicated to the preservation of Peru’s cultural heritage. The museum was first known as the Museo Arqueológico before changing its name to the current one in 1927. The museum contains artifacts that date back to ancient Peru, such as stone tools, pottery, fabrics, and ceramics that belong to the Chavín, Wari, Moche, and Inca cultures. Its collection of historic objects includes paper documents, weapons, and carvings. There are also special sections containing Inca jewelry and textiles, and murals and sculptures dedicated to the colonial period of Peru. The museo is located in the Historical Center of Lima, in the Palacio de Pizarro, the Palace of the Viceroy. It is one of the most important monuments of colonial architecture in the city. The building was constructed in 1535 as a palace for the viceroy of Peru. It later became the headquarters of the Royal Institute of Peruvian Archaeology, the first academic institution charged with preserving Peru’s archaeological sites. In the beginning of the 20th century the museo was remodeled and expanded. In the 1960s it was adapted to the needs of a modern museum and moved into new galleries.
