The Methodist Church of Nigeria was founded in 1842 by the Rev. Thomas Carter, initially as a mission of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It is the largest of the four independent Methodist denominations in the country and draws members from many parts of Nigeria.

The Reverend Thomas Carter, an ex-missionary of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) and a freed slave, arrived in Badagry, Nigeria in 1842. He founded the first Methodist church in Nigeria, the Union Church, at Badagry and proceeded to spread his mission to other parts of the country. His successors, the Revs. Smeller, Beer, Green and Hawley, after whom some of the churches of the Methodist Church of Nigeria are now named, continued his mission. After the death of Thomas Carter in 1863, Rev. D.G. Hawley became the leader of the Methodist Church in Nigeria.
