History:

The annual Lord of Miracles (Señor de los Milagros or El Señor de los Milagros) procession in Lima, Peru is one of the world’s oldest religious processions, and potentially the oldest in the Americas. Each October, the image of a crucified Christ, the Lord of Miracles (El Señor de los Milagros), is carried through the streets of Lima in a nigh tlong procession attended by up to one million devotees. The devotion to the Lord of Miracles is thought to date to 1655, when a Creole man, Luis Javier Aristu y Castro, painted an image of the Lord of Miracles on the wall of his unassuming house in Lima’s old Jewish quarter, “El Callao”. Luis was an amateur painter of some renown who had recently recovered from an illness, and attributed his recovery to the Lord of Miracles, vowing to paint a retable depicting his devotion. September 19th of that same year, during a member of heavy rains and flooding, a massive mudslide buried much of the district, sweeping away many of Luis’ homes and works. When rescue efforts began the following day, Luis’s sole remaining work was found to be almost unscathed, with the image of the Lord of Miracles undamaged, spectacularly surviving the forces of nature. Since that day, locals of the district have recognized this image as a sign of the divinity and honored it with a cult of devotion that has continued into the present day. Every October the image of the Lord of Miracles is carried from the Brotherhood of the Lord of Miracles Monastery and processed through Lima’s streets, attended by thousands of devotees, to the Cathedral of Lima in recognition of their local patron saint. The symbol of the Christ’s survival has repesseited a source of hope to generations of Lima’s devotees- and continues to be a source of celebration and reverence for many of Peru’s citizens to this day.
