History:

The Li River is one of the most iconic and scenic rivers of southern China, flowing through the province of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Located in the city of Guilin, the Li River winds through a stunning karst landscape of towering limestone formations for more than 200 kilometers before finally emptying into the South China Sea. The earliest recorded history of the Li River dates to the Qin dynasty (221-206 BC). It is mentioned in historical texts written by Sima Qian (ca. 145-90 BC) who wrote that Mount Xianglu was the source of the Li River. This was followed by a description in the Records of Guilin (AD 581) which noted that the river was navigable from Guangyun. In more recent history, the Li River has been the inspiration for some of China’s most beloved poets and painters. Famous poets such as Li Bai, Du Fu, and Meng Jiao all made pilgrimages to Guilin and praised the beauty of the river and its surroundings in their works.
