History:

Huaca Arco Iris (Rainbow Temple) is a pre-Incan archaeological site located in the province of Trujillo in northern Peru. The site is located on an elevated promontory overlooking the Moche Valley and the Pacific Ocean and is comprised of two large teocallis (pyramid temples) that were built in the Moche period in the 8th century AD. The site was first discovered by archaeologist Max Uhle in 1924 and was later excavated by archaeologists Walter Alva and Christopher Donnan in 1987. Alva and Donnan attributed the construction of the two temples at Huaca Arco Iris to a powerful Moche ruler, the Sipan Occistente (Sunset Lord). They believed the ruler had built the two temples to pay homage to the Moche sun god, Inti. The two Huaca Arco Iris temples differ in size and form, with the larger of the two temples known as 'Huaca Huamán' featuring ornately decorated walls and a stepped layout extending 16m in length. The smaller temple is referred to as 'Huaca Toro' and features a much simpler design. Archaeologists believe that the temples were constructed predominantly from adobe and stones and that they were heavily decorated with ceramic and gold artifacts.
