History:

The Cathedral of Cajamarca is located in the city of Cajamarca in the northern highlands of Peru. The cathedral was constructed in 1581 by Dominican friars, and was originally built using mud bricks and wood. The structure was renovated in 1622 when the roof and facade were changed and replaced with stone and mortar. In 1691, the main nave of the church was built and later redesigned in 1714 by adding two chapels at each side. The facade was again modified between 1776 and 1793. In 1807, the bell tower was added and the towers were again redesigned in 1816. A clock was added to the bell tower in 1820. After suffering major damage during the earthquake of 1910, the church was renovated in 1926 with several changes to its architecture. The chapel of Our Lady of Mercy was also built in 1928 and it was declared a national monument in 1954. Several other renovations were carried out in 1994 and 2001.
