The cathedral was constructed in 1712-1733 under the direction of architect Domenico Trezzini, making it the first baroque style building in St. Petersburg. It is the burial site of all the Russian emperors and empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II, along with their children and family members. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
