St. Basil's Cathedral was built in 1555–1561 by Russian architects Postnik Yakovlev and Barma Gavriil. Built on the orders of Tsar Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and Astrakhan Khanates from the Tatars, the cathedral was originally dedicated to St. Basil the Blessed. This is the origin of the name “St. Basil's Cathedral.” The church was originally intended to house the relics of St. Basil the Blessed, which had been taken from his tomb in 1479 and brought to Moscow.
