The Pillar Church of Okinawa was founded by missionaries in 1949. The first missionaries, Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Nance, arrived from California to Okinawa in 1947. They named the church "Nance Memorial Church," but later decided on the name Pillar Church of Okinawa to signify a strong foundation for the church. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Japan.
