The first palace at Peterhof was built by Tsar Peter the Great, who chose the site on the banks of the Gulf of Finland after a visit in 1705. Intended as his pleasure palace, he called it his “Mon Plaisir” (My Pleasure). Initially, the palace was just a small, two-story house, but it was expanded into a large complex with several pavilions, gardens and hundreds of statues.
