Peter and Paul Fortress is a citadel located on Zayachy Island on the Neva River in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is the birthplace of the city of St. Petersburg and the original fortress was built from 1703–1706 by Peter the Great. The fortress was part of the Russian defense system for the city, and it was besieged by the Swedes during the Great Northern War of 1700–21. It is currently used as a museum and houses the remains of all the Russian emperors and empresses from Peter the Great to Nicholas II. The Peter and Paul Fortress was founded by Tsar Peter the Great in 1703 to protect St. Petersburg from attack by the Swedes. Construction began in 1704 and the fortress was completed in 1706.
