The Monument to Catherine the Great was commissioned by Alexander III in 1896 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of his grandmother Catherine the Great’s birth. The monument was designed by influential Romantic artist Andrei Jakovlevich Shtakenshneider and was erected in 1897. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
