Mamayev Kurgan is a large artificial hill located in the city of Volgograd, Russia. The hill overlooks the Volga River and serves to commemorate the battle of Stalingrad during World War II. The hill is the burial ground for up to 12,000 fallen soldiers of the Red Army, making it a symbolic place for Russian people. The hill is also known for its 110 meter statue of a mother who is mourning for her son. Mamayev Kurgan History Originally, the area of Mamayev Kurgan was the site of a Bronze Age Mexican settlement and later a Summer Palace of the Crimean Tatars. During World War II, Mamayev Kurgan was a potent symbol of the resistance of the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. The battle of Stalingrad was fought around the hill and the ensuing victory of the Red Army inspired the Soviet Union to build a memorial along with the release of Elena Rzhevskoy’s famous verse "Be strong, Soviet man!"
