History:

The Hermitage Museum was founded by Catherine the Great on 7 December 1764. She purchased a decorations collection from the merchant Gotzkowsky in 1764, which marked the beginning of the Hermitage collection. This was followed by the development of the Winter Palace and the General Staff building, both on the Palace Square. In 1781, the museum was opened to the public by the Empress. Hermitage Museum became the largest museum of its kind in Europe. Successive emperors and empresses of Russia continued to develop the museum collection. In 1852, Nicholas I opened the first part of the collection of Oriental art, which included Islamic art and Asian artefacts.
