The Ensemble of the Novodevichy Convent is a magnificent and highly respected landmark in Moscow, Russia. Built between 1524 and 1586, it is the most important historical and architectural monument in the capital. The ensemble includes the wall fortress with five towers, the Assumption, Bogoyavlensky, and Archangel Cathedrals, and the Church of the Deposition of Our Lady's Robe. It was placed on the World Heritage List in 2004 as one of the best examples of a 16th-century Russian monastery. It is one of the best churches in Russia which you must visit.

History:

The Ensemble was built under the order of Grand Prince Vasili III by the most famous Moscow architect of the day, Postnik Yakovlev, who also built St Basil's Cathedral. The earliest buildings, the wall and the bastions, were probably constructed around 1524. The ensemble was built with both defensive and ascetic functions in mind. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.

The monastery is guarded by 16 towers, with the five largest distributed in a semi-circle around the main gates. The tallest of them is the Uspenskaya (Assumption) tower, which stands at more than 60 meters (197 feet). The complex also holds two cathedrals, the Assumption and the Trójcaściwa (Three-in-One) Cathedral, which both boast unique architectural features. There are also several monasteries and churches within the compound.
